Elderly woman narrowly escapes house fire

Early Saturday morning house fire ravages house.

A fire broke out early on Saturday morning leaving a house gutted and one women injured. Sadly, the women’s dog was unable to be rescued and died in the fire.

The fire reportedly stated shortly after 3am Saturday, 30 November. A woman, believed to be in her 80s, was home alone with her dog. The Newart Street house was burned to the ground and the women had to be pulled through a window to safety after firefighters had sawed through the burglary bars.
Fire Department scene commander Wynand Fritz confirmed, “One elderly woman was rescued from the fire and taken to Helen Joseph Hospital. The incident is still under investigation and we will await the forensic report”.

Christopher Montgomery of Emergency Control South Africa (ECSA) assisted ER24 with the rescue of the woman. “We had to cut the burglar bars in order to pull the woman out. Unfortunately we couldn’t get to her canine companion,” said Montgomery.

Firefighters were on scene for over three hours containing the blaze while concerned residents looked on.

Montgomery added, “It’s sad that we have to put things on our home that prevents us from getting out in an emergency”.
