JMPD officers turn into Good Samaritans
Private security company thankful for honest Metro Police officers
The often-thought-of hypothetical conundrum of ‘What would you do if you found a bag of cash?’ played out in full view of the public as mysterious bags lay scattered across Ontdekkers Road at the intersection with Christiaan De Wet Road on Tuesday, 12 November.
Having witnesses may change the dynamic somewhat, but there was no doubt of the outcome when Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers noticed the bags on Ontdekkers Road. The bags, containing money being transported by G4S Security, were recovered by a patrolling K9 unit. They were then taken to the Roodepoort Police Station.

JMPD spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar confirmed: “JMPD K9 spotted a bag of money on Ontdekkers Road. When they stopped they could see more bags ahead. The officers at first thought it was a cash-in-transit heist in progress and quickly called for back up”. Fortunately it was not a crime, but a simple mistake and the money was collected by G4S Security at the Roodepoort Police Station.
