Man arrested for assaulting police officer

Police urge public to cooperate with officers

A weekend reveller paid the price for trying to start the party early on Friday, 1 November. His public intoxication, alleged supplying alcohol to school children and refusal to cooperate with police earned him a weekend stay in jail and a Monday morning court date.

Roodepoort Police were on a routine patrol of the area outside Hoërskool Die Adelaar, when they encountered the suspect. He had allegedly been drinking with learners of the nearby school in his taxi. When approached by police, he became aggressive and lashed out at the officers. He then attempted to escape by jumping a barbed wire fence, but was unsuccessful.

Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Juanita Yorke, confirmed the incident. “The man head-butted the officer and attempted to flee the scene. He was chased down and arrested for assaulting a police officer.

He was taken to the station and a case was opened against him,” she said.

“This behaviour will not be tolerated and we urge the public to cooperate with officers who are carrying out their duties. Any member of the public interfering with the police’s work will be arrested for obstruction,” Yorke emphasised.

While the suspect was not a learner of Hoërskool Die Adelaar, the school was contacted for comment, but they refused the opportunity to address the incident.

The suspect has appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court and his fate will be known at a later stage.
