Illegal dumping is a serious problem and has serious consequences.

Ward 84 is taking a stand against illegal dumping

Illegal dumping not only affects the environment but takes a toll on the health and safety of residents, as well as property values. The rubbish causes water, air, and land pollution and is a huge fire hazard. Businesses lose customers, property loses value, and eventually, a once beautiful community becomes a hated and unsafe one.

A ‘No Dumping’ sign was put up on Potgieter Avenue in Hamberg after a resident used his own money to clear the rubbish that had been illegally dumped there. Ward 84 councillor, Gert Niemand, and Hamburg community members put up the sign on the afternoon of 8 October to try to prevent any further illegal dumping.

The residents who took part in placing this sign have referred to illegal dumping as a crime against both the environment and the community.

Anyone who is caught dumping waste illegally will be liable to a fine, and/ or impoundment of their vehicle. The fine for the first offence is R10 000, and the fine for the second offence is R15 000, with the possibility of the vehicle being impounded.

“Illegal dumping attracts rodents and insects and is a huge environmental problem which the City on its own cannot win. We need all residents to take ownership of their environment and suburbs and report illegal dumpers, even if they are your neighbours,” said Councillor Niemand.

Residents are urged to report illegal dumping to the relevant City of Johannesburg officials on 080 012 0555.

Pikitup offers bulk waste removal services to residents where they will remove the bulk waste (mattresses, fridges, etc) from residential properties. Appointments to have the waste removed can be made by calling the City Call Centre on 011 375 5555.
