A retired man escaped with his life on Saturday, 26 October when a fire engulfed his apartment at the Donavan McDonald Retirement Home in Maraisburg.

Fortunately, there was only one person in the apartment and no fatalities were reported.
Residents noticed the fire shortly after 10am and alerted emergency services. Quick thinking neighbours assisted in containing the fire with gardening hoses while waiting for emergency
services.

City of Johannesburg EMS and Emergency Control South Africa(ECSA) arrived on scene to extinguish the fire.
The fire tore through much of the apartment breaking windows in the front and the rear of the
apartment.
Chris Montgomery of ECSA confirmed, “One man was alone in the apartment. He has been transported to hospital and is in a stable condition”.
The cause of the fire is still unknown and the City of Johannesburg housing department is investigating the matter.
