The word of the day for 7 October is: Value.
‘Value’ is defined as the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. It can also be defined as principles or standards of behaviour; one’s judgement of what is important in life.
Oprah Winfrey said, “If you look at what you have in life, you will always have more. If you look at what you don’t have in life, you will never have enough.”
Many people look at material possessions that they either do or don’t have and value their worth upon it. You are seen to be better than someone if you have more money or more expensive possessions. We compare ourselves to others based on something they have that we don’t, and all too often, we forget about what we do have.
There are things in life of far more value than houses, clothes, and cars.
Good health, family, happiness, mobility, literacy; these are all things we take for granted. The list can go on and on about things we have but do not appreciate, but we need to start appreciating these things before we lose them. We need to be able to differentiate between what is important, and what will make us feel important.
“Nowadays people know the price of everything, but the value of nothing,” said Oscar Wilde.
We need to stop looking at the price and size of something and look at the value. Look at how it affects us, how we need it, and how it will help us. We must learn what is important, we must learn how to value something that really matters.
