West Rand Toastmasters have a busy birthday meeting
Toastmasters from Randburg, Krugersdorp and Roodepoort enjoyed birthday celebrations and entertaining speeches at the last West Rand Toastmasters meeting.
On 19 September, meeting number 471 of the West Rand Toastmasters was called to order by their Sergeant-At-Arms, Jeffrey Nkhwazi. The well-attended meeting started with welcoming remarks and the Toast of the Evening by Acting President Thato Majela. Thato also chose the theme of the evening: Face your Fears.
After Glen Campbell (Vice-President Public Relations) introduced the four new guests, the toast to Toastmasters International was given by Stephanie Watkins and the Minutes from the previous meeting were read by Jacqui Motaung.

The role-players of the evening were Ernest Watkins as Timekeeper, while Glen Campbell (who chose ‘Birth’ as the word of the evening) played the roles of both Grammarian and Evaluations Chair. Jacqui Motaung took to the stand again to count filler words, such as ‘um,’ before Alwyn van Wyngaarden, the Table Topics Master, requested that the impromptu speeches from various members, be advertisements for certain products.
Richard van Leeuwen presented the general evaluations of the evening before Glen Campbell won the Money in the Pot raffle again. The meeting’s recess was spent enjoying cakes and admiring decorations, personalised cards, and small gifts for the birthday celebration organised by Jacqui Motaung.

The three prepared speeches delivered by Claude Joshua, Stephanie Watkins, and Michael Glencross were all extremely educational. The speakers covered vastly different but still interesting topics in their speeches: extreme sport, calligraphy, and learning techniques.
The awards for the evening went to Thato Majela (Best Contributor), Heather Coakelin (Best Table Topic/ Impromptu Speech), Michael Glencross (Best Speech), and Jacqui Motaung (Best Evaluator).

West Rand Toastmasters meetings are open to anyone who wants to be a part of a supportive and positive learning environment which aims to improve communication and leadership skills through public speaking.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, 3 October at the Discovery Bowling Club. For more information, contact Glen Campbell on 073 538 9560 or email glencampbell@telkomsa.net.
