Florida paddlers paddle through the tough waters

They paddled the 30 km long distance to gain experience and points to contribute to their participation in the Marathon

The Florida Lake Canoe Club kicked off the river race season on 25 August, when they hosted a river race that started at Daleside, on the Klip River, and finished in Meyerton.

Canoeists had the opportunity to become familiar with the water and to gain experience while they paddled the 30km distance, as well as gain points towards participating in this year’s A Grade Fish River Canoe Marathon.

Jason Bryden joined the experienced Sean Jones, both members of the Florida Lake Canoe Club, and finished the 30km River Race in a time of two hours and 56 minutes.

Deon Kearns and Douglas Dall, experienced river paddlers and also members of the Florida Lake Canoe Club, teamed up to marshall the river rapids and ensure the safety of the other racers.

For some paddlers, such as Jason, this year’s Fish River Marathon will be their first A Grade River Race, while for others it will be a challenge to improve their times from previous races.
