Six months added to construction time for Braamfischer Primary School

The estimated completion time for Braamfischer Primary School has been extended due to residents of the area building perimeter walls on the school property.

Braamfischer Primary School is the only mobile school in its area, and concerned parents have now become hesitant to send their children there. The brick-and-mortar school has been under construction since October 2018, and was set to be completed within 18 months, but construction seems to be delayed.

According to the community members, the conditions at the mobile school are not conducive to learning or teaching, and as a result, performance is lacking. The DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education, Khume Ramulifho MPL, visited the school on 16 September, hoping to get a better idea of the progress (or lack thereof) with the construction.

The delay has allegedly been caused by families who have encroached on the school’s land when building perimeter walls around their houses. The contractor for the project said that there is a process in place to resolve the matter with the families who have built their walls on the school premises, but six months have now been added to the initial completion time as a result.

The DA released a statement, urging the department to ensure that proper planning is put in place for projects such as these. It will help make sure these projects are delivered on time and within the budget, and ensure that there is better service delivery to the learners who desperately need their education.

“The DA will continue to monitor the progress at the school to ensure that the learners and teachers are given the opportunity to perform well in a conducive environment,” stated Ramulifho.

The school is set to be completed by September 2020.
