The Roodepoort Police visited Westgate Mall on Thursday, 22 August, in a bid to share some information about safety with the shoppers.
Accompanied by a number of civilians, they handed out pamphlets containing safety tips and emergency contact numbers that residents should call when they need help.

“We are doing this ahead of the festive season. We are working with our community patrollers, who will be helping right through the festive season, making sure that it is safe for our residents to shop at the mall,” said Captain Juanita Yorke, the Roodepoort Police Station spokesperson.
She and the Sector 4 manager, Constable Lerato Tlalang, added that some residents had approached them at the mall and given them some tip-offs, which they were already following up.

“We would like to urge our community members to report any crime-related activities to us. You can report anything to our community patrollers, including drug related crimes, and they will notify the relevant people,” said Yorke.
Residents are reminded of the following important numbers:
*Police emergency number – 10111
*Ambulance – 011 375 5911/ 10177
*Fire – 011 375 5911/ 10177
*Metro Police (JMPD) – 011 375 5911
*Roodepoort Police Station – 011 279 6400
*Crime Stop tip-off hotline – 08600 10111
“In emergencies, residents can call 112 from their cellphones and inform the call-taker which service they need – police, fire brigade, or ambulance services. You need to remember to mention the area you live in and give your full details. You must receive a reference number and remember to always stay calm during the call,” she said.
Yorke concluded by reminding everyone that safety starts with them, and shared the sector managers contact numbers as well.
*Sector 1 – 071 675 7126
*Sector 2 – 071 675 7129
*Sector 3 – 071 675 7131
