The Roodepoort Police together with other stakeholders visited the Sector 2 area today, Wednesday, 14 August, and conducted a random stop and search operation.
They were joined by the Neighbourhood Watches from West Suburbs, Princess and Roodekrans.
According to Captain Juanita Yorke, the Police Station’s spokesperson, the purpose of the operation was to ensure that residents are complying with the law.
She, together with Sector 2 manager, Warrant Officer Johan Loots, and other officials, raided some of the flats located above the Witpoortjie Bakery and Grocer, searched some trolley bins and boxes stored in the courtyard, and confiscated a number of items.
“During our operation we arrested one person who was found in possession of dagga. We also confiscated fake DVDs and suspected stolen cellphones among other things. To all the people that support the counterfeit trade, you are killing the economy,” said Yorke.
While the Record was on scene, one of the owners of the confiscated goods approached the police and asked for his belongings back, and was told to visit the Roodepoort Police Station with proof that the goods belong to him.
Yorke concluded by saying that while they were patrolling in the area, she noticed that some households had their gates open, placing the residents at risk.
“I would like to urge community members to make sure that their gates are locked and windows closed properly so that they do not get unwanted guests. This patrol we are doing today is to promote visibility in Witpoortjie,” she said.
