Dire working conditions at the Florida Police Station
A meeting was held with community policing sub forums and they were informed of the working conditions that the detectives are forced to operate under.
Florida Police Station detectives are said to be operating under very poor conditions, which have hampered numerous cases, some of which have gone unresolved.
This concerning state of affairs was raised during a Florida Police Community Policing Forum (CPF) Board meeting.
According to a media statement released by the CPF, since the Florida team has vacated their premises in the Florida CBD, no suitable premises have been found and it stated that the Department of Public Works is not playing its role in assisting them.
It is said that the working conditions are dismal to a point where members of the public cannot be interviewed properly, among other things.
“The conditions are very dreadful. Dockets cannot be securely managed, witnesses cannot be assisted, general administration is chaotic and telephonic communications and electronic systems are non-existent, all of which lead to it being difficult and at times nearly impossible to handle criminal cases and prepare for court trials,” read the statement.
All these issues result in criminals being released back onto the streets instead of facing prosecution.
“Despite numerous repeated requests, both the Florida Police Station commander and the Head of the Detectives have been unable to resolve this problem with the Department of Public Works which, it seems, is more interested in placing their political preferences and ideology above the safety and security interests of all residents in the Florida policing precinct by ignoring their needs,” explained the statement.
It concluded by saying that the Department of Public Works is blatantly failing to ensure that the detectives are able to serve the Florida community adequately, and operate under efficient and effective conditions.
Sergeant Mpho More, the spokesperson of the Florida Police said, “Management of the police is attending to this matter as they are busy looking for a suitable place that is safe and not far from the community”.
