Judokas take South African Championships

The judokas took on the South African championships, and bagged a handful of gold.

 

Forty-four judokas from the Doryoku Judo Academy participated in the South African as well as the Novice Judo Championships recently.

The championships were held over a five-day period, at the Emerald Casino in Vanderbijlpark. The judokas bagged a handful of medals while competing in two separate divisions, the Advanced and Novice.

In the Advanced division, they took part in three separate categories – kumite (fighting), kata (forms) and team kata. Between them, they won a total of nine gold medals, eight silver and five bronze.

In the Novice division, seventeen judokas won gold medals, seven won silver and three won bronze.

According to Danie Bruwer, head coach of Doryoku Judo Academy, four judokas did extremely well in this championship. “Ruben Cordier won a gold medal in all three categories. Janu Malherbe won a silver medal in his team event and Klara Vahrmeijer won a gold medal in her team event. Both Janu and Klara won the SA Championship for the second time this year. Tegan Malherbe won a bronze medal in kumite and a gold in kata, as well as a gold for the team event. She has also been upgraded to National A referee status,” he concluded.
