Cause of ransomware virus under investigation

Residents who are still unable to vend are requested to contact the call centre on 0800 00 3251.

City Power is currently investigating the cause of the cyber-attack that struck the power utility and affected their IT applications and networks on Thursday, 25 July.

The ransomware virus resulted in customers not being able to visit City Power’s website to buy electricity units and upload invoices when making payments.

A tweet by the City of Joburg stated that some of the affected networks had been cleaned up and restored.

“City Power will continue to update customers and all stakeholders about the progress of the recovery and restorations. We will also give an update on the outcome of the investigations,” said the power utility.

The power utility’s board extended its appreciation to all their customers for being patient with City Power throughout the crisis.
