Renewing desks for our future presidents on Mandela Day

“I thank everyone that took time out of their busy schedules to be here with us, as well as all the people who funded this initiative.”

“Refurbish” was the word of the day at the University of South Africa (UNISA), as Engineers Without Borders (EWB) spent their 67 minutes for Mandela rejuvenating old tables at the Florida Campus on Mandela Day, Thursday, 18 July.

Members of the EWB were joined by students who helped sandpaper and varnish the 67 desks that were received from the institution.

All the tables will be handed over to Elethuthemba Combined School in Eikenhof.

“Today’s aim was to dedicate our minutes towards a good deed. We refurbished desks that have not been in use for a long time. Sanitary pads were also collected and they will be donated to learners,” said Kamogelo Sehoole, chairperson of EWB.

She explained that EWB is a community engagement and outreach organisation based at the Unisa Science Campus, who have been working on a Waste to Energy project with a group of learners from the school.

“The school is based in an informal settlement, so they struggle with electricity. We have a project where we are training the learners to develop a plan for the installation of a biodigester on their school premises, which will replace the LPG they are currently using,” said Kamogelo.

She concluded by thanking everyone that came and helped with the work.

“I thank everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to be here with us, as well as all the people who funded this initiative,” she said.
