Poorte beats Diggers 62–10

Poorte flank, Spook van Wyk, scored another try after a few hits and strong running from the try-hungry flanker.

RotoTank Roodepoort Rugby Club played a home match against Diggers Rugby Club on Saturday, 6 July at Ruimsig Stadium.

The match kicked off with both sides making some early mistakes, but the Poorte engine managed to warm up quickly under the dying sun of the winter afternoon and scored the first try of the game through their tighthead prop, Ian Pottas, to make the score 7–0 to Poorte.

The visitors quickly responded with a well-worked try of their own to announce that they had arrived and made the score 7–5 to the home side.

Poorte’s inside centre, Francisco du Toit, ran along the line and bulldozed his way over the try line, stretching the lead to 14–5 in favour of the Roodepoort side.

Poorte’s flyhalf, André Spyker Esterhuizen, stepped well to open up the Diggers defence, and scored a beautiful try, increasing the lead to 19–5 for his team.

After some incidents, the referee had to pause the game for a few minutes just to remind the two sides about the importance of discipline.

Poorte came back into the game with a try in the corner by no 9, Vian Haasie van der Watt, after he received a good pass from Selom Gavor, and the lead was stretched to 24–5 going into the halftime break.

The boot of Poorte flyhalf, Spyker, was incredibly accurate on the day, as he kicked over most of his conversions.

The first try of the second half came from the visitors, when their wing got an interception and ran for the corner flag to make the score 24–10.

Poorte decided to take a stand, and took complete control of the game with a good backline try that saw no 13, Koch Marx, benefit from the clean hands of his teammates. His try made winning the match completely out of the reach of the visitors, with the score at 29–10.

Poorte’s backline ran a straight line and Lux Ntsepe sold a dummy before passing to Spook van Wyk, who scored, making the score 36–10.

Poorte quickly followed up with another try from no 14, Selom Gavor, to cement their victory and push the score up to 43–10.

Poorte’s flank, Spook, scored another try after a few hits and strong running from the try-hungry flanker.

Poorte scored another try through the strong running of their loose trio, and Tristan Moses finished off the move over the try line to make the score 57–10.

Poorte dominated in all departments, running and passing well. The final pass was received by the hard-working Spook who scored the final try of the day, bringing the final score to 62–10.
