West Rand Toastmasters welcome new member
The theme for the evening was 'Self Mastery'.
The West Rand toastmasters welcomed a new member, Mampe Mosito from Roodepoort, at their meeting number 466.
The meeting was held on Thursday, 4 July, and was called to order by the new Sergeant At Arms, Jeffrey Nkhwazi. The meeting was handed over to the President, Lynnette Harris, who welcomed the guests and presented apologies.
Malcolm Harris was the Toastmaster of the Evening and he chose the theme ‘Self Mastery’. He spoke about emotional awareness and how feelings affect performance regarding self-confidence.

Secretary Jacqui Motaung was absent from the meeting and her role was taken over by Stephanie Watkins, who read the minutes of the previous meeting.
A toast to South Africa was proposed by Lynnette, and Michael Glencross once again took on the role of Joke Master.
The Word of the Evening, chosen by Heather Coakeli, was ‘Homonyms’. She took on the role of Grammarian.
Three prepared speeches were delivered during the meeting. André Diedericks presented the first speech entitled Plan the End. “This is a speech about death, that we are not immortal and need to make plans for our deaths accordingly,” explained André.
The second prepared speech was delivered by Ines Leal entitled My Prisoner, My Friend. This was an informative speech and she spoke about the prison warder Christo Brandt who befriended Nelson Mandela on Robben Island.
The third prepared speech was delivered by Esther Dreyer, the Immediate Past President. Her speech was entitled How to Change your Life. Her speech was the complete opposite of André’s speech in that Esther gave an inspiring message on how people need to keep healthy – not necessarily by running or going to the gym, but by dancing.
“We were well entertained when Esther requested Nkosi and Thato to join her in a demonstration of swing dance,” said Glen Campbell, Vice President of Public Relations.
The winners of the evening were as follows:
• Esther Dreyer (Best Speech)
• Malcolm Harris (Best Contributor)
• Thato Majela (Best Table Topic/ Impromptu Speech)
• Michael Glencross (Best Evaluator)
The next meeting will take place on 18 July at the Discovery Bowling Club at 6.30pm.
