Teenie Weenie Beanie campaign keeps babies warm

Can you knitted or crochet? If you can, support the Teenie Weenie Beanie campaign

Numerous underprivileged children will be warm this winter, as the Ward 71 councillor, René Benjamin’s Teenie Weenie Beanie campaign has started dressing up those tiny hands and heads with gloves and beanies.

On Tuesday, 2 July, René and her team were at the Princess Clinic to hand over home-made knitted and crocheted gloves and beanies.

“The idea of establishing this campaign started all when I spotted a young mum at the clinic with her baby heavily wrapped up because it was cold. When she unwrapped the baby, I realised that the baby didn’t have a beanie or gloves on. The baby was just in a normal baby-gro and that’s when the thought came to me to start the campaign, to get as many beanies as possible, knitted or crocheted, donated for these babies. So I started knitting and then appealed to the community to get support for the campaign,” René said.

Some of the beanies and gloves will be placed at local clinics including Princess Clinic and Davidsonville Clinic for the nurses to give to mothers to keep their babies warm in this cold winter.

In supporting of this campaign, the NGO South Africa Against All Rape and Crime Prevention (SAAARCP), has a knitting club headed by its secretary, Glyn Barry. Christel and Dewald Botha who are directors of the NGO spread the word to get more knitted and crocheted goodies donated.

“A big thank you goes to SAAARCP, Pat, 67 Blankets and the Wilro Park Lions Club. I would also like to encourage anyone who wants to knit or crochet or donate yarn, to please get in touch by sending an SMS or WhatsApp to 073 734 0061,” she added.
