Join the #ChilliChallenge to spread warmth
"As the cold creeps in this winter, we turn on our heaters and start wearing our winter coats to work, but for many South African people, these are luxuries when you may not even have a roof over your head."
Brand Hubb is appealing to community members to join their social media #ChilliChallenge campaign, which was created to focus more attention on their initiative of helping the homeless.
The company has decided to raise money during the month of July to purchase and donate 2 000 or more blankets to organisations across the country that help the less fortunate and are in need.
According to their statistics, Johannesburg has an estimated 8 000 to 20 000 homeless people. Estimates are that Cape Town has close to 5 000.
The company said in a statement the alarming statistic is a harrowing reminder that they must provide the homeless and poor with support throughout the year, but more so during the cold winter months.
“Many people don’t realise that something as small as a blanket can make a huge difference to a person who has very little. As a business, we are always looking for ways to give back to people and we are inviting corporates, agencies and individuals to help us by donating money towards the cause. We hope that by providing the disadvantaged with blankets, we can play a small part in aiding those who need it most during these cold months,” said Rob Anderson, founder of Brand Hubb.
Anderson went on to explain what the #ChilliChallenge is all about: “Watching a person eat a chili is amusing and quite literally ‘brings the heat’, making it an ingenious way to help raise awareness for the campaign online. Brave participants are encouraged to post videos of themselves eating a chili and then nominate their friends to do the same with the hashtag #ChilliChallenge. There are also prizes to win every day within the month of July for those who participate.”
The Chili Challenge is said to be a great way of creating social awareness, rooted in the spirit of giving back.
“We want to grab people’s attention in a way that makes you realise that there are thousands of people who are in need of warmth this winter. We are proud to be the organisers of this initiative.
