Winter temperatures can be dangerous. By planning your winter season properly, you can manage to stay healthy and safe.
Although winter comes as no surprise, many people tend to be unprepared for its arrival. If you are prepared for the hardships of winter, you will be more likely to stay safe and healthy while the temperatures are dropping drastically.
Keep your home safe and warm during this winter season:
• Install weather stripping and insulation.
• Insulate water lines that run along exterior walls, clean out gutters and repair roof leaks.
Get your car ready for winter:
Prepare a winter emergency kit to keep in your car in case you are stranded. The kit should include a cellphone, portable charger, and extra batteries, blankets, food and water, booster cables, tyre pump, first aid kit, and flashlights.
Follow these safety tips if you are stranded in your car:
• Make your car visible to rescuers.
• Move anything you want from the boot to the passenger area.
• Keep warm, wrapping your entire body, including your head.
• Stay awake and moving, that will make you to be less vulnerable to cold-related health problems.
Be ready to check on family and neighbours, especially those who are vulnerable to cold weather hazards; e.g. young children, the elderly, and the chronically ill. If you have pets, make sure they have a warm shelter and fresh water to drink.
