WATCH: Sidewalk turned into pigsty
The unhappy owner told the Northsider that the spot alongside her property is being used as a cooking, drinking, and sometimes a toilet ‘facility’ by the unwanted occupants.

A frustrated Constantia Kloof resident fears for the worst since ‘vagrants’ have begun living on the open ground alongside her property.
The property owner, who wished to remain anonymous due to fear of being victimised, accused waste trolley pushers and vagrants of turning the corner of Christiaan de Wet Road and Mulder Street (adjacent to her property) into both a pigsty and an environmental risk.

The unhappy owner told the Northsider that the spot beside her property is being used as a cooking, drinking, and sometimes a toilet ‘facility’ by the unwanted occupants.
“I feel very vulnerable right now because these guys meet beside my property and light fires, bring in liquor bottles, get drunk and start making a noise. And they also use a corner of the area as a toilet,” she lamented, adding that she fears for both the health of her family and the risk of a fire accidentally breaking out and causing damage to her property.
The Northsider visited the spot and found it to be in a distasteful condition. Broken bottles, human waste, litter, smouldering ashes and rodents feeding on left-overs in tins that are used as pots, were among the many items scattered on the ground.

When asked who she had approached for help, the homeowner mentioned that she had approached the Ward 89 councillor, Amelia Bester, as well as the police, but neither was able to assist her with the problem.
When the councillor was approached to comment on the matter, she confirmed knowledge of the complaint, and explained how she had directed the complainant to report the matter in order for it to be resolved.
“This resident contacted me and I advised her to report the by-law transgression to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and to obtain a reference number for the complaint, so that I would have something to follow up on, which she subsequently did,” said the councillor, adding that she had asked the ward commander to assist with the matter too.
JMPD superintendent, Wandile Mrubata, said they will be attending to the matter soon.
