Witpoortjie library celebrates Youth Day

The Witpoortjie library celebrated Youth Day on Wednesday, 26 June, and people came out in numbers to showcase their talents.
Marlene Botha, a senior librarian, said they give the youth of Witpoortjie the platform to come and perform or render an item that has been practised.

“We meet once a month, every last Wednesday of the month and it is basically for every person in the area that feels like they have talent to come and perform. A lot of the youth want to try out somewhere but they do not know where to start, so this is the perfect platform for them to test their ability and see how people react to it,” said Marlene.
Performances that were showcased ranged from poetry to rapping to drama. A group from Witpoortjie, which consisted of young children, presented a dance item named Kofifi and they also did a gumboots dance, which incorporated a recently released song, uMshove.

The guest judge was local artist, Slumkidd, who said he is very proud of the amazing talent that filled the room.
“I decided to come today because I am also a product of what is happening today. So when Marlene told me about the Youth Day event, I said how about we turn it into a competition and give away prizes. This was my way of giving back to them because I have developed and enhanced my skills, I have gone out into the creative space, becoming a videographer and I have a new album out, titled Ides of March,” said Slumkidd.

He gave away two of his CDs and vowed to help shoot a video for one person. He said he was doing all of this to encourage everyone to push even further.
“It is great for people to see growth in anything they do. I hope this will change someone’s life. One thing I would like to add is that to succeed as an artist, you do not have to be self-centred. You have to be willing to share whatever skill that you have,” he said.
