Poorte marches over a struggling Alberton side
In the second half, Poorte dominated in all departments, producing good running rugby from the back line and loose forwards.
Roodepoort Rugby Club played its Pirates Grand Challenge home fixture against a struggling Alberton side at the Ruimsig Stadium on 18 May. With all the clubs other teams coming out victorious on the day, this team had no choice but to follow suit.
Just after kick off, Alberton’s winger, Thorn Khumalo, got an interception, showed devastating speed and ran around his opposite number to score under the sticks. The Roodepoort outfit replied with a well-worked try to make the score 5–7 in favour of the visitors.
Alberton’s number 11 was a nuisance on Poorte’s outside defence of Lux Ntsepe and Tristan Moses, as he once again displayed blistering pace from a high ball and collected to score under the poles.
Poorte quickly identified the problems, and closed off all Alberton’s wings’ running channels. In no time, the Poorte forwards started to dominate the scrums, with breakdowns securing clean ball for the back line. Poorte backs showed quick hands and its number 11, Lux Ntsepe, immediately capitalised and sidestepped his way from the halfway line to score a fantastic try.
The score at half time was 34–14 in favour of the home side, with tries from Lux Ntsepe, Tristan Moses, Spook van Wyk and Griffith van Wyk.
In the second half, Poorte dominated in all departments and produced good running rugby from the back line and loose forwards. Inside centre, Byron Godfrey, ran a perfect straight line at all times for the loose trio to feed off his offloads.
Eighth man Spook van Wyk displayed moments of greatness as he went over the white-wash four times, with other tries coming from flanker Derrick Lottering, Carl Mallet and substitute Migael du Plessis.
With a final score of 79–14 in favour of the home side, this victory cements Poorte at the top of the log and intimidates the team’s next opponents.
The rest of the Club’s results were:
1st Team: 79–14
2nd Team: 59–0
3rd Team: 37–5
U/21s: 29–24
