While the National Elections may be done and dusted, Ward 85 councillor, Sonja Meyer, reflected on some of the hiccups she believed delayed the process on 8 May.
Sonja spoke to the Northsider about some of the glitches that she encountered in parts of Roodepoort.
“As with most stations, Horison Laerskool ran out of printing paper for the zip-zip machine, thus the party agents and IEC could not keep accurate stats. Most stations also ran out of A24 forms early, and eventually residents were instructed to vote without completing the forms. Ballot boxes were also not sealed or not properly sealed,” she pointed out.
Sonja also complained about the long queues which she felt might have been avoided. “At most stations there were three streams, but only one queue, which delayed the process even further.” she said.
She also suggested the IEC staff should’ve been divided into two shifts to avoid exhaustion.
Other than for the issues mentioned, Sonja indicated that everything else went smoothly, especially with the visibility of law enforcement.
“The JMPD and the police were visible and present at voting stations during the day. I would like to thank the residents of Ward 85 who came out to vote,” she concluded.
