Roodepoort takes no prisoners against JHB Police

It was yet another highly successful day out for Poorte.

Roodepoort Rugby Club continued its dominant start to the 2019 Pirates Grand Challenge season, as all five sides earned bonus point victories against the Johannesburg Police (Bobbies) Rugby Club.

Poorte were heading into the encounter off the back of four impressive wins against Randfontein the week before, while newly-promoted Bobbies had also earned four victories the week before, albeit against fellow promoted club Alberton.

Poorte and Bobbies locked horns in each side’s second fixture of the season, on Saturday, 13 April with the U/19 and U/21 sides having to play at Bobbies because of dangerous playing conditions at Allen Glen High School, while the senior sides (3rds, 2nds and 1sts) played at Ruimsig Stadium.

The U/21s were first up at Bobbies, and were the only Poorte side to whitewash their opponents on the day, as they put on an impressive display to win 58–0. The U/19s were up next at Bobbies, and while they won by the smallest margin of the Poorte sides, they still managed to win 33–10.

While the juniors were dominating at Bobbies, the seniors were doing just the same in Ruimsig, as the 3rd team set the tone for the day by winning their game 62–5, a much-needed victory after losing their first game to Randfontein. The 2nds followed on from the 3rds’ display, as they earned the biggest win of the day, beating Bobbies by 88–6.

Finally came the 1sts, who had fallen only five points short of a century the week before against Randfontein. The two teams ran onto the field just after 4pm, playing with a chill in the air but not a cloud in the sky as Poorte shone bright again, winning 68–7 this time.

Roodepoort’s strong start to the season sees three of the club’s sides occupying first place on their respective logs after two games (1sts, 2nds, U/21s), while the 3rds lie in fourth place, and the U/19s come in second behind Pirates.
