Lion’s honours youth with disabilities at buddy day

Lions’ Clubs gathered together to entertain 150 physically and/or mentally challenged

Yet another successful Buddy Day held by the Lions Clubs International at La Salle College, on Saturday, 6 April.

A group of local Lions Clubs gathered together to entertain 150 physically and/ or mentally challenged members of community who are ‘buddied up’ with 150 of the youth from the area for the morning.

The event serves a double purpose – it gives guests the chance to have a morning full of fun and activities, and it provides the youth from local schools with the opportunity to participate in the hardships and difficulties experienced on a daily basis by those who are not as fortunate.

Buddy Day has become a great annual celebration of the diversity of the youth on the West Rand and is now in its 15th year. The goal this year was once again to have a wonderful day with the guests and their buddies at La Salle College, who graciously offered their premises for the event. Set in lovely surroundings, the College offers everything the Lions need – a safe, guarded entrance, wheelchair-friendly access to bathroom facilities and enough space to accommodate the more than 300 buddies, invited guests and Lions,” said Clearwater Cyber Lions Club’s marketing manager, Denise Easton.

The Lions’ Clubs involved this year were Helderkruin, Clearwater Cyber, Weltevreden, Roodepoort Host and Krugersdorp from the West Rand, who were joined by Northcliff, Alberton and The Wilds Lions Clubs.

The Lions provided a packed breakfast snack to start the day and then had a variety of stalls with fun activities for the guests who were ably assisted by their buddies to complete the tasks and games.

Everyone enjoyed the entertainment by the local celebrity singer, Christian Heath, as well as some of his friends.

After a fun-filled but tiring day, all participants were supplied with a lunch pack and then it was off home to (probably) enjoy a well-earned rest while the Lions shared a great time of fellowship and social interaction.

The Lions wish to thank the various sponsors who ensured the day was a roaring success.

The District Governor, Lion Peggy du Plooy from Krugersdorp Lions Club, thanked everyone who participated and graciously presented certificates and prizes to the three winning Buddies of the Day.
