Five armed men rob Ali’s supermarket in Witpoortjie

The men left the scene in a white Toyota Corolla.

An armed robbery occurred at Ali Supermarket opposite Pick n Pay Witpoortjie on Sunday, 24 March at about 6pm.

According to shop co-owner Ali Rza, five men wielding guns stormed into the shop. Two of them went to the store room where they took multiple boxes of cigarettes with an undisclosed value. The other two men went behind the counter and took all the shop’s money, while another stood at the door to ensure Ali did not call the police.

The men were in and out of the shop in less then six minutes and left the scene in a white Toyota Corolla. No one was injured.

Ali told the Record that this was the second robbery within four months. He believed the same men were involved because he recognised one of them from the previous robbery.

He said that Sunday afternoons are usually quiet, especially after Pick n Pay closes. “This is the perfect time for thugs to come and rob us. From now on I will close my shop at 3pm on Sunday afternoon to avoid being targeted again,” Ali said.
