Horison resident receives a special donation

A voucher was given to Elaine to buy a wig after she underwent a craniotomy

Sixty-nine-year-old Elaine King, who lives in Horison, recently received some very good news after a not-so-good diagnosis.

She was one of the four recipients chosen by Mix 93.8 FM to benefit from their #FillYourHeart campaign. The radio station decided they wanted to fill the hearts of community members during the month of love and listeners were encouraged to send an email where they either nominated themselves or someone else, to receive a little assistance to help fill a need.

Elaine was nominated by her daughter-in-law, Alexandra King, who wanted the Mix 93.8 FM team to help her with a wig after she had to undergo a craniotomy.

Elaine said that she had been feeling ill since October last year, constantly losing her balance and forgetting little things, prompting her to seek medical advice. “I went to Life Flora Clinic and the doctor sent me for a CAT Scan. This is when they discovered two brain tumours. The doctor said that they would need to operate to remove the tumours and have them tested to see if they are cancerous,” she explained.

The surgery was done at Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital about four weeks ago, and Elaine said, “Not only did they have to cut my hair very short, I was left with a nasty scar on my forehead.”

This where Mix 93.8 FM came in, as Alexandra’s wish for her mother-in-law was simply to be able to have ‘a beautiful wig that would fit a beautiful woman’ – something the family could not afford to buy.

Elaine was surprised by the radio team who presented her with a R7 000 voucher from BellaZara Hair Boutique, which will enable her to go and pick out any wig she would like.

“I was so surprised when they visited me and told me about this wonderful donation. I really wanted a wig, not because I am vain, but I did not want the children to be afraid of me when they see the scar. I will now be able to wear my real human hair wig when I am out and about. I would like to thank Mix Fm for doing this for me, as well as Alexandra and my entire family for all the support and love they have given me,” she said.

She concluded by saying, “I have been to see the oncologist and will start with chemo and radiation therapy in soon. But, I will not let this get me down and am prepared to fight this all the way.”
