First games of the season yield mixed results for Bobbies

Bobbies won two of their five games

The Johannesburg Police Rugby Club (Bobbies) played their first game of the season recently, and achieved mixed results.

They hosted Pirates Rugby Football Club and managed, for the first time, to field four senior teams, which included a combined U/20 team.

“Even though we did not manage to win more games, I believe that there were quite a few positive signs for the season ahead,” said Jason du Toit, the club’s chairman.

The U/20s played first and lost narrowly, by 17 – 21 with tries scored by Rapulane Moshaoliba, Wildu de Bruin and Nigel Maruta. Christopher Maqalike managed to convert one of the tries.

The fourth team came out guns blazing and manged to win their game, 17 – 12. Martin de Souza scored two tries and Louis van Wyk one, with Martin managing to slot one conversion. The third team also won their game, 20 – 17.

The second team could not stop their opponents from running wild and scoring freely, and went down 10 – 31. Nara Mashoia scored the team’s only try, with Louis Snyman slotting a conversion and one penalty.

The first team had a tough game and even though they played their hearts out, they too could not stop their opponents from scoring freely and went down 41 – 10. Ronald Strijdom scored the team’s solo try, with Deon Hendrikz slotting a conversion and Renier Wiessener kicking a penalty goal.

The club’s next games will be on 15 March, against Germiston Simmer.
