Candlelight vigil held for Hoërskool Driehoek learners
‘Our heartfelt condolences go out to all the affected families’
First Responders from a variety of emergency services recently came together at Station 20 at the Florida Fire Station to honour those affected by the Hoërskool Driehoek tragedy.

They decided to hold a candlelight vigil and Abigail Scott-Dawkins, one of the organisers of the event, said, “As first responders, we were saddened by this tragedy and wanted to bring hope to those who were affected by this horrific incident. We did not only want to show our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their children, but also wanted to send a message to all other learners affected by the tragedy; and that is – ‘You are all our heroes and we are thinking of you during this difficult time’.”

Members from the police, Johannesburg Emergency Services, stakeholders and the community came together and united in prayer for the families affected by this terrible tragedy. Captain Juanita Yorke, the Roodepoort Police spokesperson was also present at the vigil and said, “Hoërskool Driehoek, we salute you! We honour your fallen and we pray for your families, friends and colleagues. Gone but never forgotten, always in our hearts. We pray for the children in hospital that they may recover speedily. We pray for a unified, peaceful South Africa. Together we can.”

The event was marked by a candle lighting ceremony and balloons were released in the children’s honour.
