‘Crime must fall down’

The team has also established a partnership with the Roodepoort Police to help halt crime and ensure effective protection of the community.

The community of the Princess informal settlement has stated that, “Enough is enough; crime must fall!”.

Early last year, the residents of the settlement decided to form a Neighbourhood Watch to protect the community against crime.

The aim of the Princess Neighbourhood Watch is to achieve effective crime control, reduce fears of crime, improve quality of life, and improve police service and legitimacy.

“We used to have a lot of complaints from learners from Princess High School and Hoërskool Die Adelaar, stating that they were often mugged on South Road and ended up losing their cellphones, school bags, pocket money and other valuable items. Some of the residents would say that when they came back from work in the evenings, using public transport, thugs were waiting to mug them of their handbags, cellphones, laptops and more.

“However, since we started the Neighborhood Watch, crime has decreased. We place the members at different crime hot-spots to prevent crime from taking place because the thugs know that they are being watched,” said Teboho Majoro, a member of the Princess Neighbourhood Watch.

The Neighbourhood Watch has about 40 male and female members who take turns to be on day or night duty. They are asking the communities in and around Roodepoort to help them by donating boots, reflective jackets, torches and any other essentials to help them do the job they signed up for.
