Criminals should rather have spent Sunday (17 February) in church than getting up to no good, as reports from Roodepoort Police show.
Information was received about a possible hijacking in Constantia Kloof and an intelligence-driven operation was conducted by the Flying Squad, K9 unit, JMPD and Tracker. Two suspects were arrested for attempted hijacking, hijacking and possession of a hijacked vehicle.
On the same day at about 3.30pm Roodepoort Police members, while patrolling in Matholesville informal settlement, identified a suspicious-looking male who tried to avoid them. When they approached him a struggle ensued and when they brought him under control they recovered an unlicensed firearm with the serial number filed off. A case of possession of unlicensed firearm was opened.
Also on the same day Roodepoort Police’s on-duty Serious and Violent Crimes Unit members were following up on a tip-off received from a member of the public. They went to Dunusa informal settlement and conducted an intelligence-driven operation, which led to the arrest of a Lesotho national for murder and attempted murder that were committed at the informal settlement within one month of each other. Three people were killed and three sustained gunshot wounds.
The cases are still under investigation and all the suspects will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court soon.
