The 2019 year kicked off with sprint races at Wemmer Pan, where junior paddlers from the Florida Lake Canoe Club started their preparations for the season ahead.
The race was great preparation for the juniors wishing to qualify for participation in the Inter-provincial Inter-school Kayaking Sprint Competition, taking place in East London during March.

Jennie Dallas, Gauteng Canoe Union Public Relations Officer, said, “Juniors from various schools participate in the regular school league races, where they can earn points for their school, the club where they train and individually. They also wear different colour bibs to designate the different age groups.”
She added that the race age categories are from U/8 through to 18 years of age and said, “Juniors can also earn points over a two-year period in their age category, towards awarding of Junior Gauteng colours for participation in the inter-provincial sprint and marathon events.”
The next school league races will be taking place at Emmarentia Dam (3 February), Roodeplaat Dam (17 February), Florida Lake (14 April), Germiston Lake (26 May) and at East Rand Kayak (ERK) (28 July).
The finals will take place on 28 September, and will be hosted by ERK.
