Florida swimmer makes coach proud
He participated in a number of events at the SA School Championships
A young swimmer from the Florida Swimming Club, Blake Godfrey, ended his year on a high note with a number of swimming achievements under his belt.
Blake, who represents both the Florida Swimming Club and Maragon Ruimsig, had a great 2018 from a swimming perspective. Some of his achievements included participating in the South African Junior Swimming Nationals in Durban, where he made several finals and won a bronze medal in the 200m backstroke for 15-year-old boys. He was also selected to represent Gauteng at a series of events in Italy in June.
“Blake was selected to represent Gauteng at the South African Schools Championships that took place in Johannesburg. To be selected, you had to place in the top two positions in the province in your event,” said Tracey Hemphill, Blake’s coach.
He participated in a number of events, which included the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, as well as the 50m and 100m freestyle. “He won two gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal,” Tracey said.
But, even though he had a very good 2018, he will not be resting. He has a full swimming calendar for 2019, starting with the South African Junior Nationals in March. “He also hopes to qualify for the Youth Nationals, which runs simultaneously with the South African Nationals in April,” Tracey said.
She concluded by saying that swimmers who qualify to participate nationally need at least R30 000 per year to enable them to attend the swimming competitions country-wide. “If you are able to make a donation or assist our swimmers financially in any way, please contact me on 083 399 1205 or send an email to orcas@mweb.co.za.”
