The Lions Club is the largest service organisation in the world, with several branches that provide a variety of services for their local communities.
According to Sandy van Heerden, the District Chairman for Public Relations, there are currently just over one million Lions’ members actively involved in the more than 46 000 clubs worldwide.”We have men and women serving their communities in more than 200 countries and geographical areas, ensuring that there is always a Lion nearby where there is a need,” she said.
Sandy added that the Lions Club was founded in 1917, and said, “We are best known for saving sight, but we also feed the hungry, aid senior citizens, help the disabled and so much more. We are a global service network of volunteers that live out our motto (We Serve) to help make a difference in our local communities.”A variety of community services are provided by Lions Clubs, and they try to provide a service each month.
“The Lions Club of Wilro Park hosts a Cuppa for Cansa event annually, as well as the popular Wilro Cycle challenge. There is also the annual Buddy Day, where learners from Grades 8 to 1 are paired up with mentally handicapped children to spend a fun day together. This is organised by members from various clubs, including Clearwater Cyber, Helderkruin, Roodepoort Host, Krugersdorp and Weltevreden Park (to name a few),” Sandy explained.
Sandy concluded by saying that by becoming a Lions Club member, you are afforded an opportunity to volunteer locally or internationally, “You will be able to make new friends and professional connections. Getting involved in our projects will help you to make your community a better place to live in, all while having a lot of fun!” For more information, or to find out where your nearest Lions Club is, contact Sandy on 083 564 6388.
