University of the Third Age welcomes guide dogs to first 2019 picnic
The picnic was a means of kicking off 2019 for the NPO.
The University of the Third Age marked the beginning of 2019 on 8 January with a picnic in the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, where they were visited by the Guide-Dogs Association SA (GDASA).
The University of the Third Age (U3A), a non-profit organisation, caters for retired people or senior citizens; people in the ‘third age’ of their lives. It is committed to providing life-long opportunities for people no longer in full-time employment and rejects the often-held view that there is an inevitable intellectual decline as people become older.

Ever since expanding to the West Rand 16 years after U3A made its way to South Africa, the U3A West Rand has seen a positive growth in membership, with about 50 people now part of the organisation. The NPO usually kicks their year off with an official and rather formal gathering, but this year opted for a more relaxed and enjoyable get-together with a picnic in the Garden instead.

They discussed what lies ahead for them in 2019, while representatives of the GDASA carried out an informative and eye-opening presentation on what it’s like raising a service/ guide dog. The group stayed for a lovely finger snacks lunch and were able to interact with the GDASA members as well as the service/ guide dogs they brought with.
