Wilro Lions spread festive cheer

It was an evening filled with Christmas carols, popcorn and family fun

Not even Mother Nature could get in the way of the Lions Club of Wilro Park’s annual Christmas Carols and switching on of their Christmas tree lights.

Elmoné and Franike Warnich could not wait for the movie to start.

Sandy van Heerden, the Club’s Public Relations Officer, said, “This event is usually held outdoors, but with the inclement weather, we had to have a Plan B, which meant that we decided to move the festivities indoors.”The evening’s activities were kicked off with an indoor picnic and singing of Christmas Carols (accompanied by the Two Old Men – Duncan Hamilton and Graham Short), and followed by the switching on of the Christmas tree lights. The evening was concluded with everyone enjoying a family Christmas movie with some popcorn and candy floss.

“In 2010 we started doing this to honour the memory of past president, Molly Francis, who fell ill on her birthday (9 December) and passed away on Christmas day. Everyone always said that Molly had hair of silver but a heart of gold. The Christmas tree lights, which will be turned on every night until after Christmas, are a symbol of her light that shone so brightly when she was still a Lion, and ensure that everyone in the community can also experience some Christmas joy.”

Karin and Ben Diederichs spread some Christmas cheer.

She added that everyone who attended the event had to bring a Christmas decoration to place on the tree, and said, “This decoration was in memory of someone they were thinking of during this time of year.”

Alana de Kock, Endré Warnich and Zuraya Stevens.

Sandy concluded with a message to the community, and said, “Everyone always asks, ‘How can we change the world?’ I believe the answer is quite simple – one random act of kindness at a time. If everyone did this, the world would be a much better place. I would also like to thank everyone for their support throughout the year and wish them a wonderful Christmas time.”
