Segments of the public, political parties and other civil watch groups are outraged after a video of Black Land First’s (BLF) President, Andile Mngxitama, in which he calls for the killing of white people, surfaced recently.
In the video, which was taken at a BLF party event in Potchefstroom on Saturday, 8 December, Mngxitama said that for “every one black person killed” his supporters must kill “five white people”, including women, children and pets. Mngxitama claimed the statement was misunderstood and should be seen in the context of self-defence.

Various political parties and other organisations, such as the Freedom Front Plus, are now in the process of laying charges against Mngxitama and have asked the public to also report the matter to the Human Rights Commission and Independent Electoral Committee (IEC). According to the IEC’s Code of Conduct, as contained in the Electoral Act, this type of behaviour is a contravention which carries a ten-year prison sentence, a R200 000 fine, the loss of the political party’s IEC deposit and cancellation of the party’s registration.

A local resident, Pierre Pretorius, said he lives in real fear. “A lot of his followers are young and impressionable and chances are that they will take his call to kill to heart. I take it very seriously and fear for the lives of my family and me. Then there is also the issue of double standards. Other perpetrators of such behaviour have been fined and jailed but he does it openly on a public stage and nothing happens,” said an angry Pretorius.
