Prayer and support asked for MDF manager
Pieter has been in hospital since early November
“We are asking the community to keep my father-in-law in their prayers, as he is still in hospital.”
“He has been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Life Flora Clinic where he has been in and out of consciousness since early November,” said Louis Fourie.
Louis’ father-in-law is Pieter Joubert, the General Manager of the Gauteng Muscular Dystrophy Foundation (MDF). Louis added, “Pieter suffers from Facioscapulahumeral muscular dystrophy which affects the skeletal muscles of the face, scapula and upper arms. It can also affect the respiratory system and other vital organs.”
During the week of 12 November, Pieter suffered a terrible setback with his health, and on 13 November, he was admitted to Life Flora Clinic. “Here he suffered more setbacks and was placed in a medically induced coma for a significant period of time,” Louis said.
Pieter has been involved with MDF South Africa since before 1995. Theuns Langenhoven, the chairperson of the organisation, said, “He served on the executive committees as a volunteer where he worked tirelessly for the well-being of those who suffered from this terrible genetic disease. He also played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Gauteng branch.”
He added that Pieter did not let the numerous challenges and limited resources get him down, “The office became the centre hub of the MDF and is now well known and established among the MDF, members and the community it is located in.”
Theuns said that Pieter is seen as a respected and prominent person in the organisation, which stems from the love for the organisation and members he serves. “For many of our members, the MDF is Pieter and Pieter is the MDF. Since he fell ill, the messages of love and concern have been streaming in. Everyone is praying for his recovery, and all of us – members and committee members alike – cannot wait for his return.”
