Roodepoort’s Leadership Forum aims to lend a helping hand
They are providing a platform that can help equip young leaders with the necessary skills
The school hall at Hoërkool Roodepoort was filled with 180 very excited Grade 7 learners and their teachers, eagerly waiting for the launch of the HSR Leadership Forum.
They were surrounded by all of their favourite superheroes, who were just as eager to tell them about the day’s purpose and activities, creating a festive atmosphere.
Sandrie de Beer, one of the coordinators of this brand new initiative, explained, “Today we welcomed the 2019 Grade 7 leaders from 12 different primary schools in our area, to be part of this Forum, which will be a platform where they will have the opportunity to be equipped and developed to become the best leaders they can possibly be.”
She added that they have been on the lookout for a project that would include – and be beneficial to – the community and said, “We noticed that most of our surrounding primary schools do not have the resources to attend or host leadership-orientated workshops and development courses. We saw the need and decided to do something about it!”
Sandrie said that the forum will create opportunities where primary school learners can interact and network with their peers, who are not in the same school, but will soon be, as they all graduate to high school.
“We believe that all leaders can influence and develop each other, that is why we did not limit the invitation to only a few schools,” said Sandrie.
The main focus of the forum is not to change what these leaders have already been taught by their respective primary schools, but to enhance their knowledge, strengthen their confidence and equip them even more.
“What we would like to achieve with the forum is to centralise the available resources for development, to reach and develop multiple schools at the same time and to build the overall leadership skills of our youth, as they are the future,” she said.
Sandrie added that they were also in the process of developing a website, where the leaders would have access to quite a number of helpful resources. “There will be one training workshop per year, as well as regular forum meetings. The leaders will then be able to keep updated by logging on to the website, “ said Sandrie.
The launch of the forum was concluded with the leaners’ first training workshop, and they did not only leave with more knowledge and confidence on how to tackle their huge responsibilities for next year, but they also received a gift pack, containing something sweet to eat, something to drink, as well as a notebook and pencil, which are set to become their closest – and best – friends in 2019.
She concluded by saying, “This is only the first of quite a number of changes waiting for the learners, parents and staff of Hoërskool Roodepoort. We have some big plans for January 2019, and are very excited. I cannot divulge too much, but we will keep everyone informed.”
