Medals galore for wrestlers

Nine wrestlers from the Danie van Zyl Wrestling Club competed in the recent South African Youth and Junior Wrestling Championships.

The tournament was held in Cape Town, where the wrestlers had to show their mettle against some stiff competition.

They stuck to what they had practised and bagged eight medals – two gold, three silver and two bronze.

The wrestlers, who won medals are:

• Joshua Faul (silver)

• Dominick Aoun (gold)

• Siyabonga Kennedy (bronze)

• Johnny Esterhuizen (silver )

• Terrence Esterhuizen (two silver)

• Darren Dickman (one gold and one bronze)

During the annual club and medal championships, the club had 34 entries in the various categories and they were awarded 33 medals, resulting in them being announced as the winners in the B League of the tournament. They were also second overall from among all the wrestling clubs in Central Gauteng.

The last tournament of the year was the Noordvaal Championships, and seven wrestlers formed part of the team.

The club’s head coach, Danie Erasmus, said that he was very proud of all the wrestlers and the hard work they put in. “We managed to win 22 SA medals throughout the year, and Darren Dickman managed to bag three gold medals for the year. We also had a total of five South African champions for this year, with the wrestlers being awarded their SA colours a total of eight times,” Danie said.

He added that all the wrestlers did their club and province proud, and that their hard work, perseverance and determination throughout the year were rewarded.
