“I am very unhappy with the poor service I received from City Power,” said a frustrated resident, Elizabeth Smith.
Elizabeth wants to expose City Power for their for unacceptable and poor service delivery. According to her, early this year officials from City Power came to her area to change their old meters to new smart meters. However, somehow they managed to swap her meter reading with her neighbour’s meter reading. Thus she is now paying for her neighbour’s electricity consumption.
“There are only four of us in my house and we use less electricity than my neighbours. They have a flatlet, a jacuzzi, one stove in the house and another in the flatlet, and I have to pay their monthly bill,” said Elizabeth.
She also stated that she reported the matter to City Power but they took months before coming to her property. She also reported the matter to the Ward councillor, Suzanne Clarke, who escalated the matter but still City Power did not come to resolve it.

On her recent municipal statement, she was billed for rates and taxes, which she is not supposed to be billed for because she is a pensioner.
The Record contacted City Power, and spoke to City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, who responded with the following: “Smith is still linked to her old meter number which has already been removed and replaced with a new meter. As a result, the customer is currently billed on estimates linked to the old meter”.
City Power reminds residents that they are still continuing with a meter installation project whereby displaced and unaccounted for meters are removed and replaced with automated and semi-automated meters. One of the aims of this project is to achieve billing accuracy and do away with estimates.
