Stay safe during the Black Friday madness
'No shopping is more important than you and your family'
Black Friday does not only bring with it a lot of discounted prices, but also a number of safety challenges for those who are seeking bargains and a bit of retail therapy.
This year, Black Friday will be taking place on 23 November, with many retailers and shoppers ready for a big sale.
In the past, the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Public Safety has had its hands full dealing with Black Friday shopping-related incidences, such as stampeding, lost children, damage to property, assault and even theft and robbery.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun said, “We want our residents and visitors to enjoy the shopping experiences in the City safely.”
The following tips will ensure shoppers stay safe during this day:
• Take care of your children and don’t let them wander off on their own
• Take care of your belongings – don’t leave your valuables such as bags and phones unattended
• Go cashless – use bank cards when paying
• Be alert when drawing cash at an ATM and don’t expose your cash
• Ensure that your car, windows and boot are properly locked/ closed
• Be patient and courteous to fellow shoppers and road users
He concluded by saying, “Remember, no shopping is more important than you and your family. We also urge the retailers and shopping centre managements to step up security measures and ensure that shoppers are assisted during cases of emergency.”
The City’s Emergency Management Services, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and the Disaster Management Centre will be on high alert and on standby to assist residents where needed.
In case of emergency, please call the Public Safety Call Centre on 011 375 5911.
