Keeping the body and environment healthy

She added that she tries to pick up as much waste material as she possibly can in an hour each day, to ensure there is less the following day.

What started as a morning walk to refresh the mind and loosen up the muscles for an Amarosa AH resident, Noel Richard, ended up as an obsession to clean up the area.

The elderly Ruimsig Retirement Village resident, who has been exercising with a litter bag in her hand for the past five years, told Northsider that she started the initiative after coming across filth during her pleasant early morning walks around the block.

While on a mission to keep healthy and fit, she decided to do the same for the environment. “This has become part of my routine because I can’t handle the mess on our pavements and roads – and I think it’s disgusting and it has to be taken care of,” she said.

She added that she tries to pick up as much waste material as she possibly can in an hour each day to ensure there is less the following day.

When asked about the involvement of other residents, Noel indicated that people complain about the mess but never get involved in such initiatives. “People don’t like to get too involved in anything – it’s too much of an effort and responsibility for them,” she criticised.

Like any profession – there’s always time to retire, but the determined Noel does not see that happening any time soon. “I won’t stop as long as I’m able without using crutches,” she concluded with a laugh.
