Roodepoort ESS scored plenty of goals

All four teams played in a final

The action on the soccer pitch matched the sizzling weather during a recent tournament hosted by Roodepoort Euro Soccer Schools (ESS).

Junior Mwale, the Roodepoort ESS coach, said, “The purpose of the tournament was to give the players a chance to compete for something, as well as to raise money for our upcoming year-end prizegiving.”

Teams from Florida, Roodepoort ESS, Polokwane ESS and One Touch FC from Fourways participated in four age groups (U/7, U/9, U/11 and U/14).

Three Roodepoort ESS teams (U/14, U/7 and U/9) topped their groups with a 100 per cent win record and the U/11’s finished second in theirs, resulting in all four Roodepoort teams contesting a final on the day.

The U/7-team were first up, and Kailu Baburam scored two goals to secure a 2-0 win. The U/9’s played against Florida, but, even though they played very well, they lost 2-1. The U/11’s had a very tough game against One Touch FC, and lost 2-1.

The last final of the day was the U/14’s who faced off against Florida, which proved to be a thrilling game, with eight goals scored between the two teams. Roodepoort came out as victors, with a 5-3 score line. The scorers were Thato Ramaloko (two), Mfundo Mdyogolo, Nanix Lindenburg and Phadisi Mashigo.

Junior concluded by saying, “I was very proud of my boys in how they played and also how they conducted themselves. It was a great achievement which will live long in the memory of the children. The highlight for me was when the final whistle for the under 7 final went off and the U/9’s, 11’s and 14’s all ran onto the field to celebrate with the little ones. To see the smiles on their faces and the togetherness within this group of young boys brought tears to my eyes and I am looking forward to more wonderful moments like these in the future.”

The next tournament will be held early next year, to raise money for the international friendship cup which will be taking place in July.
