Safer Festive Season campaign launched at Westgate
The launch was attended by a variety of law enforcement personnel
Patrons at the Westgate Super Regional Shopping Centre recently had first-hand experience of what the Festive season has in store for them.
Members from various units of the Police service, Gauteng traffic police and Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) as well as various Community Policing Forums, formed part of the official launch of the Safer Festive Season campaign.

The event was also attended by quite a number of top brass from all the different entities, including Major General Pharasi (Johannesburg West Cluster Commander), TJ Masilele (CPF Provincial Chairperson), Councillor Michael Sun (MMC for Public Safety, City of Johannesburg), Councillor Naga Patrick Lipudi (Executive Mayor, Mogale City), Major General Max Masha (Acting Provincial Commissioner) and Major General Kekana (West Rand Cluster Commander).
The focus of the campaign was to demonstrate the readiness of the various law enforcement departments, to deal with the challenges that come with the Festive Season. Clearwater and Cradlestone Malls also formed part of this campaign.
The campaign was kicked off in style, with a drill squad, marching band and motorcade, featuring members from all the various units involved in the campaign.
The campaign, ‘Quiet Storm’ will be focusing on making the crime-riddled Gauteng province a safer place and ensuring that people have a peaceful Festive Season. During his keynote address, Major General Masha said, “Operations will target aggravated robberies, the proliferation of illegal firearms, and special crime-awareness and prevention operations. It will also prioritise cases involving women, children and other vulnerable groups, and enforce by-laws and road-safety regulations.”
Councillor Sun added that the JMPD was excited to share their Buya Mtheto initiative, which was launched with great success this year, with the other law enforcement departments, to ensure the Festive Season will be an enjoyable one for all.

He urged the community to play an active role in the campaign, by helping the police fight crime through reporting these activities.
Sun concluded with a special message to all law enforcement members, “Please keep yourself safe during this time, while you are fighting crime and protecting the public.”
