JMPD officers refuse to take a R25 229,50 bribe

The JMPD CCTV Unit officers rejected the suspect’s bribe and continued to book him in at the police station.

The MMC for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun, commended a number of officers from the JMPD for their hard work in fighting crime and not accepting bribes.

While on patrol on the M1 North near the Carr Street off-ramp, the JMPD’s CCTV Reaction Unit stopped a suspicious-looking blue VW Polo last night.

On investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle had been reported as stolen at the Johannesburg Central Police Station. The male driver claimed that he owned a car dealership in Sandton and had bought the car from another person and would therefore not know whether the car was stolen.

According to Sun, when the officers and the suspects were approaching the police station, the suspect attempted to bribe the officer with R5 000, and when the officers refused to take it, he increased his offer to R 25 229,50.

The JMPD CCTV Unit officers rejected the suspect’s bribe and continued to book him in at the police station, adding a charge of attempted bribery on top of possession of a stolen vehicle.

Michael Sun said, “We commend the five officers from the JMPD CCTV Unit for their impeccable show of integrity and professionalism. We have honest JMPD officers who want nothing but to serve the residents and fight crime in the City. This is why it is important for us to continue with the effort to professionalise the JMPD and recognise the honest hard work of our officers”.

He will be meeting the five JMPD CCTV Unit officers to personally thank them for upholding the image of the JMPD and their effort to fight crime.
