City Power has opened a case of theft.

The Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba is calling on all residents to help find the criminals who robbed a City Power substation.

On Saturday, 20 October at about midnight, six armed men allegedly arrived in a truck and stormed a substation in Mulbarton, south of Johannesburg. They overpowered the security officers and a staff member and tied them with cable ties. The thugs then broke into the onsite storage facility and stole a 500m drum of cable, and five x 75m copper cables.

The substation is currently undergoing a major upgrade and is guarded by the contractor tasked with the upgrade.

A City Power electrician who was working on an outage in Glenvista arrived at the substation to try and trace the fault that caused the outage. He was also held and tied up. The three were robbed of their cellphones and the electrician’s work toolbox to the value of R3 500 was also stolen.

“Police were called and a case of armed robbery has been opened at Mondeor Police Station. We cannot allow criminals to threaten the delivery of services in our city. I encourage anyone with information about this crime to contact the Mondeor Police or City Power Risk Control on 011 490 7900,” Mashaba said.
