Skills Development Centre gives youth opportunities

The centre helps to get children off the streets and gives them skills that can enable them to get jobs.

Unemployed youth looking to uplift themselves through various skills programmes are urged to join the Skills Development Centre’s programme, as it continues to benefit and shape the future of young children within the community.

The centre is based at the Davidsonville Community Hall and has been operating for more than one year. It gives children an opportunity to be taught life skills, such as crocheting, embroidery, sewing and art work.

“The community is battling with youth unemployment and increasing substance abuse and crime. The centre helps to get children off the streets and gives them skills that can enable them to get jobs. My partner, Esme Elias, and I have dedicated our time and committed to positively and effectively changing the lives of the youth,” said co-founder, Sarah Tshabalala.

Sarah also mentioned that the class she is busy with has just finished learning the basic steps of knitting. They recently finished knitting a scarf and they are now going to start with making booties for babies. “When learners are able to sew clothes, they can sell them to earn pocket money for themselves,” she said.

“If you are currently unemployed, it’s always good to interact with your community and be engaged in projects that will help develop yourself and the community,” she added.
