Gauteng colours for Witpoortjie boxers
They will compete at the upcoming South African Schoolboy championships
Three boxers from the Vikings Boxing Academy and one from the Randgate Boxing Club competed in the recent Gauteng Schoolboy and -girls championships and did very well.
The Vikings boxers – brothers Aphelele and Amahle Msomi as well as Andrew Salhab – were very excited to showcase their skills during the championships. Phillip du Randt, the head coach said, “Unfortunately, Aphelele could not compete in the tournament, as he did not meet the required weight of 30kg. But that did not discourage him and he vowed to be back next year.”
Amahle won his final fight with ease, and made his coach proud with his professional display of boxing skills in the ring. After three quick rounds, he was crowned the new Gauteng champion in the 42kg division. “Amahle would like to thank the Samaritan from Witpoortjie who donated boxing shoes to the club. It helped to make him feel like a true champion and look the part,” Phillip said.
Andrew had no opponents in his division, and was awarded a walkover victory. Unfortunately, in terms of the new championship rules, he will not be recognised as the official Gauteng Champion.
Both Andrew and Amahle were selected for the Gauteng team that will be competing in the South African Schoolboy Championships in December.
The boxer from Randgate Boxing Club, Suzandra Cordier, was also selected for the Gauteng team after she was awarded a walkover victory due to a lack of opponents in her division.
Phillip concluded by saying, “We are extremely proud of our boxers and wish them all the best for the SA championships. I would like to thank my staff and coaches at the club who work so hard to help the boxers achieve success.”
